A few days ago I saw someone on a forum talking about how much they missed the old AOL chat rooms.

I remember growing up in the 90's and early 2000's I would spend hours in the chat rooms, trying to find girls to talk to. You would ask A/S/L and roll the dice if they were telling the truth or not.

A more simpler time. No Discord. No Reddit. No social network with followers, likes, feeds, algorithms, engagement scores and a subscription to unlock half the features.

You log in to your email, you pick a room and you got you list of close friends telling you who's online, invite them to the chat room you're in and you just shoot the shit with strangers via keyboard.

That's what Chat56K and its free for everyone. No subscriptions, no clout chasing, no algorithms.

I'm deliberately trying to recreate the feeling of getting online in the late 90s and early 2000s. The ugly interfaces, screen names, public rooms, instant messages and that weird feeling that you had absolutely no idea who you were about to meet.

I'm even adding little things from that era because I don't want this to just look retro. I want it to feel retro.

There's no AI angle. No productivity angle. No attempt to revolutionize communication.

I just think the internet used to be more fun.

So I rebuilt a little piece of it.
