0 -> 10k Subscribers In 1 Year Challenge

I'm building an audience from scratch.

My goal is 10,000 Newsletter Subscribers in a year.

I plan to help creators go from 0 to 1 by conducting experiments and iterating on wins and losses. Here's how I plan to do it.

I'm going to focus on a Big Idea, not a Niche.

You should too.

Here's mine:

Every creator should build their own digital lab because everything you do should be framed as an experiment.

A digital lab can simply be a newsletter, blog, or both. Substack, Beehiiv, and Ghost all blur the lines. Just pick what you can afford and what you enjoy using.

I'm using Ghost, more on that in another post.

Positioning your newsletter as a laboratory is a reminder to yourself and to others, that everything you do is trial and error. You're still figuring things out but you're not afraid to share with others.

What's amazing about experiments is you remove the pressure to succeed. Failure is sometimes a better teacher! Your focus should be on learning and iterating. The scientific method is helpful, we have to remember to use it.

Here's a refresher:

  • Define a question to investigate
  • Formulate a hypothesis
  • Make predictions
  • Run an experiment to test the prediction
  • Analyze the data
  • Draw conclusions and use the results to form new hypotheses or predictions

When everything is an experiment it's much easier to quit something that isn't working and move on. It's "just" an experiment, who cares if it didn't work?

It's easier to Fail Fast.

Labeling everything as an experiment also removes your ego from the process of creating. It's a reminder that you don't have the answers. You're searching for them. You adopt a student mindset.

Hunter Labs is my way of communicating to the world that I'm building the plane while flying it. It will serve as a public journal where I share every experiment from hypothesis to conclusion.

I've always enjoyed teaching and I believe content creation is value creation at scale. I hope Hunter Labs reflects Applied Learning at Scale.

Everything I share will be a direct result of something I actually did. You'll be able to learn just as much from what doesn't work as you will from what does.

I hope to create value for creators every single day by simply being transparent about how I'm growing. For example, if I sponsor a popular newsletter I'll share the amount I paid along with gained from it.

Here are some of the things you can expect to see at Hunter Labs:

  • Growth Experiments
  • Newsletter & Twitter Performance Reports
  • Behind the scenes look into my content creation process
  • Weekly Reviews
