0 to 6,000+ Users in 6 Months – What Actually Worked

Six months ago, I launched Illustration.app, an AI-powered vector graphics generator. Today, it has 6,000+ users and growing MRR from subscriptions.

No paid ads. No viral moment. Just consistent execution. Here’s exactly what worked:

1. SEO Was the Main Growth Driver
   Instead of chasing social media trends, I built a sustainable traffic source:

Created SEO-focused pages targeting long-tail keywords.
Optimized for high-intent searches (people already looking for AI vector tools).
Let search traffic compound over time.
This took months, but it now drives a steady stream of new users daily.

2. Focused on Retention First, Monetization Second
   Getting users is one thing. Keeping them is what matters.

Frictionless onboarding → users get value instantly.
Iterated fast based on real feedback.
Let users hit a paywall naturally. Free plan delivers value, but the upgrade is an obvious next step.
This made subscriptions convert much more easily.

3. Simple, Subscription-Based Pricing
   No one likes complicated pricing. I kept it simple:

Free plan → useful, but with clear limitations.
Paid plans → full access, straightforward value.
No guesswork. Just a natural upgrade path for serious users.

4. I Joined the Right Communities
   I didn’t waste time in generic startup spaces. Instead, I engaged in:

AI art forums.
Indie dev communities.
I didn’t spam links—I contributed first, promoted later. Answering questions, sharing insights, and occasionally mentioning my tool when relevant built trust and organic word-of-mouth.

5. The Key: Relentless Iteration
   No single “hack” got me here. It was:

Consistently improving the product.
Listening to users.
Doubling down on what worked, dropping what didn’t.
