I joined reddit less than a month ago and my first post (on the advice of a user here!!) got me banned from the r/investing subreddit.
My second post received 1.2k upvotes.
It performed so well, it was the highest upvoted post on the r/stockmarket subreddit of all time and they made me an admin.
The post was never really intended to be a segue into my product but I guess it helped. I just started by trying to add value and went from there.

This example works as a good guideline for all of content marketing: if you try to self-promote then you'll end up getting nothing; but if you deliver unique and interesting value to your potential customers then you'll get their attention.
I agree w/ folks that there's potential here, and I think it's probably high enough to be the foundation of your whole marketing/credibility strategy moving forward.
In no particular order, you might consider:
All of these could be helpful, depending on what you want. By mixing and matching, you could get visibility, subscribers, credibility, and then access to key partners/clients.
I really think you've struck gold with this particular content angle. Nice work. Just remember to follow the 80/20 rule of content marketing: 80% of your stuff should be like this, purely giving huge value to the people who read it. And doing that will eventually get you the "right" for 20% (or less) of your content to be self-promotional. Some people make the mistake of doing one good piece of content and then switching into heavy self-promotion and losing their early momentum. Also, find a non-intrusive way to capture email subscribers! They're the gift that keeps on giving.
this is gold. I was planning to do (1) and publishing the whole work as a paper. I LOVE your ideas 2-4 as well. Great value add Rob and I really appreciate this - thanks!
My pleasure. Give me a shout if I can be helpful -- for whatever reason, this project has piqued my interest and I'd love to see how it develops ;)

Do you have any ideas on how to explain the difference in reception of the first and second ones?
ya - first post I thought I was being helpful (I literally built a site stocktive.com to help people with fundamental investing for free, no ads, no nothing) and then just told people about it on reddit but I think because reddit gets abused a lot for marketing the site admin was pretty quick to shoot me down.
second post I just thought ok fk talking about any company, I'm just going to post some useful info. After they got the value add people kept asking "so what are you working on now?" then I just edited the post to point to some content around the new company credium.io so people could find out more about what I'm up to
Thanks for the response, Janny
I kinda struggling with the adding value part. Maybe it is about my perception about what is valuable for them. Because when I comment with something I really think is valuable for OP, it seems people don't appreciate it in most cases.
what do you know that nobody else knows? everyone has something. start there
Well done! Any plans for a third Reddit post? 😉
Nice work, congrats!
Congrats - really HQ post.
On your creduim project how are you guaranteeing profit?
I'm guaranteeing their money back if we're not profitable. As in, we'll refund platform fees if we produce a negative return in the first quarter. I think this was a pretty huge value-add for investors that come on board and it shows our interests are aligned with theirs but for some reason a small minority of people were sceptical of our platform because of this offer - it's a shame really but I'm going to remove that guarantee entirely in the next day or two.
Internet points are fun!
That's great! Reddit is so discouraging when banned, but I'm glad you persisted! Hard work wins💪 I wonder how many people from there became the site visitors🤔

a bit hypocritical of me to debunk the whole PhD idea because it leads to junk research in the public domain and then publish a paper/get a PhD no? Also, regardless of if it was a lot of work - the end lesson is still the same. Produce something that adds value (and if that takes work then fine).
