12 Software in 12 Days

A few years ago I wrote a software that can run other software embedded in an IDE (like IntelliJ IDEA, Android Studio, PyCharm, WebStrom, Rider, Eclipse or NetBeans). This software is distributed as a plugin for the different IDEs and runs Java applets. Does anybody here remember Java applets? They used to be software running embedded in an HTML page (like Flash).

So when I went on ski 🎿 holidays a few weeks ago, I decided to write one new applet a day to provide it in the bookmarks of my Applet Runner plugin.

The planning

  • write the applet in the morning
  • ski in the afternoon
  • polishing the applet in the evening

The result

  1. PDF Viewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=praLjfMkHXg
  2. XML Viewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbdhAlO92Zg
  3. JSON Viewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmM3r1csw5A
  4. YAML Viewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKNZBLLKCkg
  5. MS Word Viewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St9ggFR9Ejc
  6. Excel & CSV Viewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAix0KT9zMU
  7. Powerpoint Viewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9V1Nx3oZT4
  8. MP3 Player https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7V1uZHQAtZw&t=3s
  9. Video Player https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjM62E6ucWU
  10. Tetris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdI656TP1V8
  11. Clipboard History https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm1YUhjE25A
  12. Terminal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H05lwFdo858

Tips

  • Focus on coding (not on compiling/testing)
  • Accept that not all features planned will work or be done
  • Heavily use open source libraries (even buggy ones) and internal framework
  • Accept failure if if too buggy/complex. I've done it twice: text to speech and database viewer days failed
  • Writing the software day is not the same day as making the video or releasing it
  • Enjoy the process. Otherwise you find yourself procrastinating.

And now going back to releasing more than 12 software in 12 month 😃
