I've really enjoyed the couple StartupCircle sessions I've joined. So far, it's been James Clear and Laura Roeder.
Thanks Abdo and Courtland!
I’m really curious to hear about all of your takeaways, and I’ll start with a few of my own, focused on building a social media presence. Laura and James were pretty in sync.
FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS. Pick a platform or two to focus on and hit it with all of your effort. With social media: ask yourself, what platform is truly best for your content? If your product is super visual, Instagram may make sense. If the product is informational, Medium. Etc.
If you build it in their backyard, they will come: Laura: you want to go where your potential customers already are, and Facebook still has billions of people. James: Find the people who already believe in what you’re doing but just haven’t seen your work yet, and forget about convincing the people that don’t.
Build the social proof cycle: James: if you’re aiming to make yourself or your company an authority, do the same two things for years: (1) leverage other platforms with audiences who benefit from your work (2) leverage the social proof of where your work has been showcased to go a level slightly above your previous best. To make this more concrete: you might start with posting on your own blog. But you know that Medium has way more readers than you do, so you try to get introduced to someone who runs a popular Medium collection. Once you’re in there, you can say to even more popular Medium collections, “Hey, check out the collection I was just in! Would love to be in yours too!” From there, maybe you try to leverage your Medium presence to get Business Insider, then leverage BI to get the Atlantic…you get the point. Don’t undervalue your accomplishments :)
