5 Tips for Managing Customer Expectations as a Startup

Managing customer expectations can be a challenge when you've just gotten started.

It's not easy to live up to customers' expectations, as some of them can be more demanding than others. So, you should be extra careful when making promises, as you'd have to fulfill them eventually.

Not setting realistic boundaries from the get-go may lead to dire consequences and have a negative impact on your brand's reputation.

So, it's best to set realistic goals and expectations for your customers that you can fulfill with ease considering your current capabilities and resources. This is one of the most efficient growth hacks and may help ensure lasting customer relationships.

Here are a few tips that may help.

1. Know Your Customers

The first step to managing customer expectations is getting to know your customers. Without being acquainted with the needs and preferences of your target audience, it would be difficult for you to manage their expectations.

Therefore, it's essential that you are familiar with your potential customers' demographics, interests, and buying behavior. These factors help you come up with different customer profiles and personalize your offerings as per the insights.

However, accessing this data would not be easy, as 95% of businesses find it difficult to access customer insights.

So, you'll have to come up with a well-thought-out plan and obtain the required information to devise growth strategies best suited for your business. These insights would not just help you stand out from your competition with respect to your offerings but also help you foster customer loyalty in the long run.

2. Don't Overpromise

One of the common mistakes aspiring entrepreneurs make is making promises they can't keep. Catering to the needs of your customers is one thing, but you shouldn't commit to things you can't deliver at the moment.

This often backfires and does more harm than good. There's nothing wrong with setting high customer expectations, but you have to ensure that you currently have the required resources and capabilities to keep your promises.

3. Be Transparent

If you wish to manage your customers' expectations effectively, you should be transparent when communicating with them.

It's understandable that your core priority is scoring conversions or getting your hands on new projects. However, your lead generation process shouldn't encompass lies or be built on the foundation of deceit.

Being transparent with your customers is the only way you can gain their trust and ensure lasting relationships. So, when interacting with your potential customers, you should say things as they are and refrain from hiding any information from them.

Your customers should know what they're signing up for and what they'll get in exchange for the price they've paid. Hence, it's essential that you clearly communicate the terms of service and lay out all the facts that can help your customers make informed decisions.

4. Be Approachable

One of the best ways to manage your customers' expectations is to ensure that they make the most of the solutions you offer. You can make it happen by educating your customers on how to benefit from your solutions and drive maximum value from them.

You're the first point of contact for your current and potential customers when they have questions about your offerings or any queries in general. So, it's best that you make it easier for your customers to reach out to you.

This is one of the reasons why 63% of customers prefer businesses that are active via live chat and always within reach of their customers.

Live chat is one of the most convenient options for your customers to contact you. However, it's not the only way to stay in touch with them. You can also consider other options, such as solving problems through an email help desk or catering to your customers' queries via phone.

Just stay connected with your customers and be swift in responding to their queries or concerns.

5. Listen to Your Customers

Did you know that 50% of customers prefer businesses that offer inclusive customer experiences?

Customers like it when their voice is heard and businesses offer tailored solutions to them. This isn't just pre-purchase behavior. It also encompasses post-purchase scenarios where customers express their feelings and share their experiences with your products or services.

Around 53% of customers expect businesses to respond to their reviews about offered solutions within an hour.

So, just embracing feedback isn't enough. You should let your customers know that you've listened to what they have to say. However, responding to customers' feedback doesn't mean that you should always agree with them or entertain their suggestions.

If they've said or wanted something that's off-limits or that you can't offer at the moment considering your capacity, you can humbly decline their request or respond to their feedback in accordance.

By doing so, you don't give your customers false hope, as you've clearly set expectations about what you can or cannot offer.

It's a Wrap

There you have it. The 5 tips for managing customer expectations as a startup. Ensuring customer satisfaction and lasting relationships is the key to growing your business. Hi Thomas, thanks for sharing these tips. I am currently facing the same difficulties with a side project I am currently working on (GetMyMFA).

When entreprise-grade customers get in touch requesting heavy-to-implement features, I often reply positively but with a relatively expensive price. So far customers haven’t replied positively to such requests but it feels like such features are often a “must-have” to them.

Based on your article, it feels like one would simply decline their requests as they would be too “expensive” to develop time wise.

What would you recommend in such situations?
