Hi!
I'm an avid runner who over the years has struggled to maintain consistency in training and therefore haven't been happy with the progress. Lately, I have realised that a good adaptive training plan and motivating support can move mountains. For example, I have been able to get physically and mentally fit enough to be able to finish 42-hour ultramarathon.
So I would like to test an idea runners see value in 1) training plans that fit peoples real life 2) and have cheerful support during the hard times.
Would love to get your #landing-page-feedback and thoughts on the idea if you are interested in marathon training.
Thanks!
Cool concept, I had one thought about this I'll pass along from observing my friends who run races.
Have you considered switching to and/or offering a one-time fixed fee option instead of a subscription?
The habitual runners I know do it on a very committed schedule. It's a built in part of their life that requires no motivation or priority. They treat it like eating, they have to do it to keep their sanity. Whatever life throws at them, they fit in their running habit.
The other (and much larger) segment of people I know that have run marathons are not avid runners, but do it as a personal challenge/goal. There's a hard reality that comes into play when your aspiration meets the the rigorous training requirement to make it 26 miles. This groups struggles with the time commitment and the pain involved with pushing your body to reach the goal.
I think the second group would really benefit from your product. You can decide on the price that makes sense, but it may be easier for that 2nd type of consumer to think of this as a one time investment in their goal.
Thanks Iain. Super helpful and yes I have been thinking of playing around with the price. To be honest that 29eur price is a bit of provocation at the moment to see how people react and hopefully say something along the lines "that's too expensive! but if you offer me an X then I'll think about it". I have used that tactic in the face to face interviews and it has helped me to understand peoples real needs. Didn't work this time tho :)
Hey, yeh this looks really interesting. I'm not exactly the target audience as I haven't done a marathon before but have done a few halfs and would have been interested in something like this when training for those.
Landing page looks good. The feature that stood out to me was the "adapting to your schedule" as it's the biggest problem I had with the half training. The main question I'm left with is how is the training plan and tracking implemented at this point? Is it through an app, website, email, spreadsheet or just talking directly with someone? Also can the benefits of a good training plan be quantified? (e.g. a case study of marathon times before and after a training plan or something like that)
29 eur/month would take a lot of selling for me - I've never paid for gym membership or personal trainers so would need to be sold very hard on the benefits, but I'm probably a more recreational runner than your target audience of marathon runners.
Hope that helps!
I agree that the pricing seems steep. Seems more like B2B pricing than B2C pricing.
thanks. how about 10 eur per month. What support, results, help you would like to get for 10 eur?
Thanks! This is super helpful.
Can I ask more about what exactly was your problem when you said that the training plan didn't adapt to your life? Was it that your available days/time and runs in training plan didn't match or you needed to skip training and weren't able to change plan accordingly? or something else?
I started with the idea that everybody could use this program but ended narrowing it down to the marathon training. Mostly because it helped me to focus my target audience. Starting to think that this worked against me :)
here is one example:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9repdc90zyljy9j/Screenshot 2019-03-05 17.48.48.png?dl=0
at the top, there are real distances that person ran (time is hidden currently) and in the bottom is the marathon time prediction based on that run. over time we can see nice progress towards a faster pace.
does that work for you?
this is relatively easy if the runner is using Strava, Endomondo, or similar tracking app. Currently, I'm doing all this by hand but will automate it as soon it makes sense.
thanks for the honest feedback about the price. What else would you expect to get from me so you would be willing to pay 29 eur per month?
and sorry for the long response
It was more the second for me - often the scheduled days would end up being double booked for impromptu drinks with friends or colleagues, things like that. That then knocked on future scheduled sessions if there were rest days etc. I can't actually remember what service I was using but you couldn't easily re-schedule days so I just gave up with the training plan in the end and just did best effort.
I think that's probably still the right thing to do to keep it narrow at the start, even if it makes it a bit harder to find early users. Keeps the product and marketing focused :)
Yeh that would be a great feature. With my question I was actually thinking more about specific examples/case studies of the long term differences your training plans can make e.g. examples of how much time can be shaved off a marathon if you follow it.
I don't think I'd be your target audience here as I'm much more of a recreational runner so I'm not sure any extra features would further convince me at this point I'm afraid. Doesn't mean others wouldn't though :)
thanks Nick. Can help you anyway with your recreational running? :)
Just sent you my email through your Typeform :)
