$6,000 in sales from a mockup

My last business was a company called doorofclubs.com. When we finally came across the concept that we thought could ultimately be the business, we decide to try and validate the idea by selling early access to our community before we constructed it. Our grand plan was to create a mock up and go out and and try to sell access to companies.

The mock up was done by me a non designer. I used powerpoint to cook something up and then paid a designer to make it look half way decent. We gave our selves 6 weeks to sell 4 pilots for $1500 dollars each. I don't know where we came up with that price tag.

6 weeks later we had spoke to what seemed like 60 companies. Shockingly we got 4 to sign agreements. Bank of America, Stripe, ADP, and a large marketing company.

The lesson was you know you are on to something when buyers will happily pay you before you have anything to show. Door of Clubs was acquired in August 2019.

Do you have any stories about how you turned nothing into something? I would love to learn from them.

Love it! Have you tried the same approach with online communication only?

      1. 3-4 months. The advantage we had was that we were selling to campus recruiters. We made the sales in May... the recruiter didn't need to have access to the software and community until August right before the school year started.
      2. If you send me your email... I will share it with you.
