A newsletter landing page in 2 hours... roast me

Hey everyone!

I set out a goal in 2021 to make more content than I consume, so what better way to do that than make a newsletter.

I made this landing page in 2 hours Monday night and I want you to roast me. Pick apart every little problem you have with it. Don't hold back.

Lessons From Failures

Update 1: I made edits as I received feedback.

Update 2: Added the first speaker

Great website honestly! You only needed 2 hours? Then I donΒ΄t want to say how long it took us create paperless.io πŸ˜… If you have feedback let me know

Haha, Webflow is AMAZING. Makes making really beautiful websites super easy. Better than squarespace or wordpress.

Honestly, your website looks top notch! The auto playing videos (or are they gifs?) and how it goes step by step is really good.

You've got to teach me how to make those @Garreis_Jonathan

        Thanks for the amazing feedback!

I am giving feedback on the reviewed version.

    Positives:

    1. Good copy.
    2. Good tilted section that highlights the value you will be providing.
    3. Good use of Bill Gates quote.

    Improvements:

    Hero Section:

It needs an overhaul. Always use text on the left side for hero. It's a natural reading pattern. It is the copy that the visitor should be reading first.
Make the font-size of the headline bigger. Consider something like 60px.
Use a simpler image that does not need words to convey the message. You already used the copy to make an initial impression. Use an image that supplements it.
If you really want to use that quote of Sugar Ray Leonard, you can use it before the email input in italics in a smaller font.

My alternative suggestion to the image and the quote is to use a sample of monthly video interview in the hero section.

    Why?

    A. It supplements the copy that you are really providing quality content which teaches something new.
    B. It makes you stand out as you already gave the user a glimpse of what to expect.
    C. Very few newsletters use a video because they are all about text. It's your value proposition. Why not make it count?

    Hope this helps.

@thearslankhalid thanks for the feedback! πŸ™ŒπŸ½

      1. Switched the text to be on the left and made the headline MUCH bigger.
      2. Honestly that photo is a random one I grabbed on Unsplash. Love the suggestion to put a sample video up there. Since my first interview won't be till end of January, I'm thinking to put a placeholder there with info on who is being interviewed, when it is, and a small bio. I will do that maybe over the weekend?
      3. Any suggestions to the copy to emphasize that it's a video newsletter?

I lined up my first interview just yesterday, so I actually had no idea who I would interview when I was making this landing page on Monday πŸ₯΄

PS - This was my first post on indiehackers and the support from the community is awesome.

      1. 2

That's a great idea. Maybe you can always showcase the name of the next interviewee on your newsletter. You can A/B test it. Good luck.

Updated with the first speaker lined up!

I didn't want to fight with webflow to get the speaker info to show above the fold (even though I know that is probably a better implementation). Will likely do that in another iteration.

Let me know of your feedback!

          1. 2

Much better. The hand lettered numbering in the interview section is creative but it's overlapping on the next. Needs a tad bit more spacing.

I really like the look of the new story section.

            1. 1

Hmm yea was between keeping it overlapped or not. Increased margins now.

  3. 2

    My 3 main suggestions.

    1. Better no logo, than a wrong one
The logo doesn't match with the rest of the page both in terms of color and font (this may be a personal impression, but it's not common to use a random font only for the logo).

Plus the position and dimension are confusing.

Where do you want to attract people's attention?

The main copy has to be central. Now instead I see:

    • the logo,
    • the huge space below,
    • the picture.

Based on the copy is better to reduce the dimension of the logo. Reduce the space below. And put a bigger headline on the vertical center of the section above the fold.

    2. Too much copy above the fold
There's too much stuff to read.

The image contains copy. The headline is long. Also the subhead is quite long.

I had to put time and attention to get your message. Visitors won't be that generous.

    3. What problem do you target?
What pain of the reader do you want to eliminate with your newsletter?

    It is not 100% clear.

Will it be just a historical newsletter? Or will it help me with my problem/fear/stress?

Did you consider a title specific on the problem?
Something like: "Are you afraid to fail in your business?"
Or more in general: "Do you have PROBLEM X?"

This will make clear the problem, and also it will help you to have shorter more direct copy.

Let me know if this makes sense for you.

If only there was a way to upvote multiple times?

THANK YOU for all the feedback @Samuele Onelia. πŸ™πŸ½

Made a bunch of changes based on your feedback. Can you take a second look? I'm sure there's something else that needs improvement.

Hey! I like the idea actually, but I left some comments on top of the page itself here: https://capsule.click/commentary/39350a10-c63f-426a-b622-ab63014ad790

      1. I don't know what tool that is, but it is AWESOME.
      2. Hmm yea 2nd person to point out the wording at the lower half is lacking. Need to work on it
      3. Have had a lot of people say they like it, but don't end up subscribing. Any insights on why you, personally, didn't subscribe?

Thanks for taking a peek and sending over feedback @himat. You rock 🀘🏽

  5. 1

No big red flag. I think it's good to go as a MVP.

Once you get certain amount of subscribers, you can count on them for feedback.

    1. 1

At this point it's no longer made from 2 hours. :)

Made tons of changes as people gave feedback in the past week.

      1. Hmm, maybe you thought the blue was dramatic because it only showed up below the fold (aka needed to scroll to first see it)? I moved it up a bit to show up without scrolling. Let me know your thoughts on this change.
      2. Thanks for the feedback! Yea seems like I need something better for that line.

Thanks for taking a peek and sending over feedback @timosarkka. Appreciate it lots πŸ™πŸ½
