Does anyone have any really effective tips for converting free users to a paid plan?

Does anyone have any really effective tips for converting free users to a paid plan?

I've got a really simple one, but it's a bit manual.

I get an Intercom notification whenever someone signs up, then I use the Intercom support app to message them offering a demo when they're poking around the product for the first time.

If I've got the time I'll demo right then and there.

When this goes really well, they just sign up for the paid plan. Although sometimes they want a bit more time, and I'm often completely ignored!

What incentives are you giving them to upgrade? Why do you need to demo for them?

For https://www.checkbot.io/, the idea is that the free version is useful enough for casual use but should be quickly outgrown by advanced users. There's a few banners in the app that nudge you to upgrading as well. I'm likely going to try free trials with emails being sent about upgrading as well.

Demoing gives me the benefit of showing the 'Team' & 'Enterprise' parts of the platform that are locked to individual users, plus there's the confidence of seeing insights in the platform, and use cases for those insights.

When a prospect arrives that I believe will be more interested in that part of the platform, eg. someone in senior leadership role, my main ambition is to sell them on this enterprise platform, rather than the team version which people sign up to first.

      No discount-led incentives yet!

Drip emails have worked for me. Personalizing them is always a good idea and making it look as genuine as possible rather than marketing (even though it's automated) is important.

      Good tip - thank you

What are you using for your drip campaigns? I've been struggling to set them up properly on Mixpanel.

I use Mailchimp automation and it works for the amount of customization I need. I do know that it's possible to use a custom solution alongside it if you need further automation than the company offers.

I use Intercom for in-app drip campaigns but haven't started reengaging with emails to users that have dropped off yet.

Yes, don't try to do it. Find other revenue models using the user data. I found many.

Seems like that's the consensus. Thanks for your help!

Yeah, you can alienate some users. Some will be like "I just want to scroll around and see what's what and this guy invades my privacy". Consider using emails instead.

      Thanks - good tip.

You need to offer them something for free first. For example I am creating some ad creatives for my clients for FREE and then more than 60% of them convert and subscribe to my paid plan... Customers should realize you give something valuable for free and then the start communicating with you... use your products and want to upgrade to your paid plan... In our century of strong competition it works quite well ))

I've just gradually been adding bonus member's content (since my whole product is content) to free content. It's been slowing increasing my signup rates.

Also, @robwalling and @MikeTaber just talked about that topic in their most recent Startups for the rest of us podcast. It's worth checking out.

Free trial is in place. There are still some steps for the user to take before they can purchase - namely to invite their team & get them using the tool for at least two weeks.

Lifecycle emails are a great idea to improve engagement - thanks.
