What a yoyo ride building a startup is.
When looking at my analytics, it felt like I was looking at something like Tesla stock of the price of Bitcoin. I hadn't seen graphs like that in my professional life.
The funny thing is when I saw that, I couldn't help but think of it as something like a stock that would come crashing down as fast as it rose.
I kept telling myself that this is a business with real users and revenue, not a speculative stock, so there won't be a correction in sight.
Well, this last week, I've been proven wrong. My site www.bitcompare.net has taken a huge hit and it was due to a technical mistake that completely blew our SEO.
I'm confident we can rebound, but the timing is bad as we're in the middle of renegotiating contracts with partners.
Anyway, I thought I'd share this bit of news as it's good to show what a rollercoaster building a startup can be and hopefully some of you can relate to this painful setback.
Hopefully I'll have better news to report over the coming weeks and months.
Onwards and upwards!
That's tough. What was the SEO mistake?
What was the mistake you made? The only thing I could imagine causing an effect this bad would be forgetting to 301 all your old pages, or blocking robots!
Is it a 50% decline in traffic or revenue? I see your site is about cryptocurrency, so I'm not very surprised that there would be less traffic this week vs the week before. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Bitcoin had a crazy run that ended ~10 days ago.
Ended?
Look at a chart and tell me you don’t see the difference between the month ending Jan 8, when Bitcoin overtook and then doubled its previous all-time high, compared to the period since then. I’m sure search volume for cryptos were considerably higher during that run up.
