Always think like a CEO
I started my career in UX, moved to marketing, then found my way into product management. I’ve collected a lot of skills along the way, but the same question kept coming back: can I actually succeed as an Indie Hacker without deep development experience?
The honest answer used to feel complicated. I spent time taking C# courses so I could build the deckbuilder games I had in mind. I dug into Unity. My early career required HTML and CSS. I’ve always kept a foot in the coding world, but I’ve never been a full-on developer.
Then something shifted. With how quickly Claude Code has progressed, I suddenly have the equivalent of a CTO attached to my business far earlier than I ever expected.
But here’s the part people gloss over:
This only works if you think like a CEO.
If something feels off, slow, or not good enough, question it. If the output doesn’t match the vision in your head, push back. Challenge the work. Challenge the direction.
Always question everything.
It forces better thinking and reveals angles you wouldn’t have found otherwise. I tell it to audit my code, point out vulnerabilities, identify market gaps, and highlight tech debt. The more pressure I apply, the sharper the output gets.
Treat these tools like your CTO, and you naturally step into the CEO role. You set expectations. You define what “good” looks like. You measure progress instead of reacting to it.
Because here’s the truth: the technical barriers keep dropping. Anyone can get code, research, prototypes, whatever, almost instantly. What doesn’t become instant is strategy. Positioning. Differentiation. Vision.
That’s your edge now.
Honestly, it always has been.
The difference is that execution no longer requires a giant team.
I’m leaning into that with the product I’m building. I wanted a simple way to turn all this work into clean, useful docs I could hand off or reference without babysitting the process. So I built something that does exactly that.
