Any BETA community tips/ideas?

About to launch a B2C product that been in the making for 2 years and I am looking for ideas and expirience share about building the BETA users community. (at the moment just collecting emails on the landing page hocoos.com)
- Where did you build it? (facebook gruop, dedicated forum software etc.)
- How did yuo grow it? (Invite only, ads, etc.)
- What worked for you best in the process and what mistakes yoou recommend to avoid.
