In my experience, Reddit has been far more successful than Twitter, but maybe that depends on what you're trying to do. Recruiting users/beta testers seems to be something Reddit is a good place for. By the way, does anyone know the right way to use Discord? I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing there.
I've found Reddit to be quite sensitive to self-promotion. Curious, what's your experience with this, and perhaps your approach to mitigate?
It really varies depending on the subreddit. I've found that text posts (instead of just links) where you sort of "explain yourself" and humbly articulate the value proposition tailored to that particular community are received well. And then be willing to treat that thread like an AMA and answer questions really quickly.
Answering other people's questions is an easy way to contribute to Discord communities.
But to what end? Helpful commenting in the depths of a discord chat, reddit post, or twitter thread is great just for the sake of being helpful, but won't get results necessarily for your own growth.
What's your process for contributing in this way, yet still maximizing audience capture?
Great article! Funnily enough, I noticed leaving comments on reddit and getting people to join my discord and DMing them was the most effective in getting interest.

No, I am more casually dropping comments. So I'm in the AI space and I'm currently developing an AI API for developers. It'll host Stable Diffusion and a GPT-3 alternative called Bloom
So I browse various AI subreddits (r/StableDiffusion, r/GPT3, r/OpenAI, and a few more general AI subreddits) and search for people developing apps that incorporate these AI.
Usually, it's a self promo post from them, and I provide feedback and then drop "Also, if you're interest, I'm developing an AI API that uses a GPT-3 alternative called Bloom that is much less expensive, you can check out updates on my Discord here" and then drop the link.
So what I would do is essentially leave valuable comments giving advice to people asking it and leave your link after rather than a sales-y comment.
In fact, this comment right here is a good example!
