I'm trying to build an audience. I had zero followers and just got my first. Should I send a DM (not sure what I'd say in it if I did?) or is it weird/creepy to DM your new followers?

Keep it personal, ask a question to give them a reason to reply. Don't let it look like you're mass mailing these people.
Agreed, and build a relationship through public conversation first, then move to DM when appropriate!
