Ask IH: What sub-skills does Marketing have?

I'm reading through Josh Kauffman's book The First 20 Hours (https://www.amazon.com/First-20-Hours-Learn-Anything/dp/1591846943) and I chose Marketing as the skill I want to acquire. One of the principles of rapid skill acquisition is breaking the skill you want to acquire down into sub-skills.

So I want to ask you guys: what are the sub-skills that have to be learned to acquire the Marketing skill? πŸ€”

Thank you so much! πŸ€—

Here are my top five qualities for a great marketer:

    • Empathy
    • Communication (listening, writing, and speaking)
    • Love of testing and experimentation
    • Creativity
    • Critical thinking and data analysis

In terms of skills, I'd recommend:

    • email marketing automation
    • writing marketing copy (brand voice, fundamental best practices to provide value and reduce friction)
    • understanding of the marketing funnel and being able to synthesize it into your buyer's journey
    • social best practices and, if desired, creating CPC ads

That said, the above skills are probably for a marketing generalist. I'd recommend leaning into your strengths. If you're more of a data person, hire a freelance writer and/or marketing strategist. If you're more creative, outsource your marketing automation or data analysis.

That said, I don't know my strengths yet so I'm exploring every area πŸ˜…. Currently I'm experimenting with different types of content and trying to engage the community on IG 😁
