Audience building outside of twitter?

What's been your experience building an audience while building in public using other platforms outside of twitter?

My audience hangs in FB and maybe LinkedIn so wondering if anyone else has done the same and had any knowledge to share?

So far I'm engaging in FB groups and answering people's questions but dunno if I should do other things...
