Avoid “landing page words”

When you're writing landing page copy your want to speak like a real person. This means avoiding words such as:

  • Unlock
  • Unleash
  • Enhance
  • Empower
  • Supercharge

These are “landing page words“. Real people don't use them.

Agreed. I think a lot of this is people copying what they see much larger companies doing, thinking they have to do the same. You don't! Usually copying big companies is a mistake because:

    1. What they do while they're big often isn't what they did to get big.
    2. You have no idea if you're copying something that works or doesn't work.
    3. All else being equal, it's generally advantageous as a business to differentiate yourself, not to be the same as everyone else. Having your own voice is a part of that.
    4. As an indie hacker, you're usually selling to other innovators and early adopters, and they often appreciate a more human touch.

I mentioned that the company sponsoring my newsletter this week was built by two dads...

The result was more more click throughs than on any previous email campaign.

I think people were interested in what two dads built. Dads are very real people.

A possible future issue I'm working on is called "Speak like Human. Act like Human."

Where I basically outline how to speak like a human in your landing page and product copy.
And how to behave with your users and potential users like a real person.

Essentially, "practical ways of being authentic" lol

I think I'll reference this IH post in there, if you don't mind

Look forward to reading. And sounds good. Also shared here

Never thought about this. But you are right. Thanks for pointing this out.

This is a good reminder to re-write the main heading for Frontend Mentor! 😅 Cheers Harry!

I actually got the idea after watching @olly do a teardown of your landing page haha!

Really love the site. Just the header could be a bit more human.

Hahaha, that's brilliant. Yeah, I haven't changed that heading since I first put the website up. I definitely need to focus more on talking directly to the FEM audience in a more personal way. Will try and get my (nonexistent) copywriting hat on 😅

Thanks for the kick up the backside that I needed!

agree, you have to be mindful of the copy you use to attract your audience. Looking forward to the work of antdke when it happens.

I think it depends on your audience, right?

I use the word "unlock" all the time. Just the other day, I told my kids that I needed to find my keys to unlock the car 😉

Yes, that's in the literal sense.

But companies use it in the metaphorical sense: “Unlock your potential...”
Real people don't tend to use it metaphorically.

Yes, I was trying to make a joke (hence the emoji wink) – I agree with your post!

Hahaha! I gotya now! My mistake.

          Was in work mode

Totally agreed! I just launched a landing page at for a tool I'm creating http://www.statbrew.io/ What do you think of the wording I have there?

    1. 2

weird landing page - very human copy. kept me engaged.

I'd tweak this: “An analytics solution capable of collecting custom metrics from any codebase with unparalleled developer experience”.

Quite verbose. Simplify it. But on the whole it's nice

        Got it, will update! Thanks
