B2C experiment: Would you be more likely to try / use my platform if you knew my story first?

I am in 2 minds about this. Everybody seems to be getting onto the "build an audience" bandwagon and I am not sure it's necessarily the best way to go about stuff for everybody, but maybe that's just me.

I recently started giving building in public a go & realised I quite like sharing my random shit on twitter. However, even if this might somehow end up bringing some followers to my account, I still don't think it should necessarily be linked to getting new people onto my platform. Why is an audience so necessary? Is everybody building one? And if we take this out of the equation, as well as the almighty SEO, how do you reach B2C customers?

Are founder stories the only thing that make you want to try a product? If not, what else does and through what channel do you find these products?

As a consumer, I’m most likely to use a new product via search or a recommendation from family and friends.

Very interesting! When doing a google search to find a product, would you be more likely to use one of the products at the top (which most of the time are ads) or would you ignore those and scroll down a bit until you get SEO results?

Depends on the search but I usually do try to look at the organic results.

          Makes sense! Thank you :)

Just speaking as one consumer here... I always find it interesting to know what motivates people to build a product. BUT even if you have a very interesting story behind the product, my ultimate decision to use the product is based on whether it solves my problem, not on whether your story appeals to me.

It sounds like you are enjoying your new experiences building in public, so why not continue? Even if your audience doesn't convert into customers, you're still spending time doing something you enjoy... and (maybe this is sacrilegious to say on IH) it's totally fine to do things that you enjoy that don't make you money. Right?

That sounds fair Brandon! So on the other side of the spectrum, besides the inevitable big brands, do you tend to use any anonymous tech tools, for which you don't know the maker of? And if you do, how did you come across these products?

Love the sacrilegious IH thing 😂I'm not really in that boat tbf and I think you don't have to monetise bloody everything to make it. In terms of twitter - yea I actually started enjoying it as soon as I stopped trying to use it like all the "growth hacks" suggest 😅and that way I actually went from no followers to like 40 something

Hmm, anonymous tech tools... I use a Pomodoro timer! It's great... No idea who makes it. It was introduced to me by an instructor at a coding boot camp I took.

I honestly feel like doing twitter in a way that you enjoy is probably much more sustainable (in terms of motivation) than constantly employing growth hacks... So I'm glad to hear that you've found some followers doing it your way!

          Thanks Brandon 🙌
