Okay so this my observation... 🎸🍻
Every band ends up with someone who owns the PA. nobody plans it. one guy buys a mixer because the venue's system kept cutting out mid set and five years later he's the sound guy whether he signed up for that or not.
Lights are going the exact same direction. and most bands haven't noticed yet.
Here's the thing that actually gets me. bands will argue for a month about three hundred dollars of overdrive pedal that literally nobody in the audience could pick out of a lineup. then walk onto a stage lit by two work lights and whatever the bar has aimed at the dartboard.
The sound obsession is real. the lighting blindspot is even realer lol. 🤣
... And the bands getting called back for gigs consistently???
they have lights.
Because at some point one person in the band sat down with a manual, bought a few fixtures off local sale pages over two years, and just started building looks while everyone else stayed out of it entirely.
Nothing in the rig has to match either. two Betopper beams next to a pair of older Chauvet wash cans next to a par can that predates the band. doesn't matter. what matters is that one person owns it and actually programs it before the show.
Because when it was a group decision nothing ever got programmed. they'd show up with four fixtures sitting in a case because none of them did the homework that week 💀
And here's the LED era reality that makes this even more of a no-brainer now. stage lighting used to be a genuine nightmare. halogen fixtures that got so hot they'd literally sunburn you through a full set. cellophane color gels that somehow made it even hotter. one guy spent an entire decade putting on sunscreen before gigs until the band could finally afford something decent.
Now you can build a legitimate stage setup buying used LEDs off marketplace for a fraction of what anyone spent on their guitar rig. there's actually no excuse anymore.
The bands with lights always get the calls. it's part of the entertainment. it's a show. the more memorable the better. and a solo artist doing a one person show especially needs this because lights make up for the physical presence a full band creates just by existing on stage.
This is one of those things that feels completely obvious the moment someone says it out loud and yet most bands are still out here walking into bars hoping the venue sorted it.
They didn't. they never do 😂
