Chargebacks are a gut punch. It feels like theft.
Before you even know it happened, the money is pulled from your account and you’re left begging the card holder’s bank to give you your money back.
The deck is stacked against you and most businesses lose, but here’s how I’ve gotten my chargeback win percentage into the 80s.
There are three keys.
In order...
The VISA/MC policies are explicit here. Unless you have a checkbox for the user to “… [acknowledge/accept] that... [policy or link to policy]” you will lose. It’s automatic.
Make your purchase terms outline what’s being purchased, what isn’t being purchased, the terms of that purchase, any recurring charges, and the return/refund policy.
Send the terms to your friends to review. If five friends get it 👌
It should have four sections:
Stipulated facts
Factual background
Rationale for dispute
Requested outcome
Keep it under three pages at the max. Two is ideal. Your audience is an agent of your customer’s bank that has a stack of these on their desk. Get to the point, remain professional in tone, and stay out of the drama.
Follow these steps and you'll greatly increase your chance of winning! And if you want to take a deep dive on this topic, please check out my site with more information. 🙏
