Beginning My Journey Towards Acquiring Small Software Businesses

Hi everyone! 👋

My name is Nader. I’m a software engineer with 13 years of experience, and over the next few years I’m hoping to transition into acquiring and operating small software businesses.

Interestingly, I’m not looking for the next unicorn or the latest AI startup. I’m actually drawn to boring, profitable businesses that quietly solve real problems and have loyal customers.

I’m especially interested in things like:

  • WordPress plugins
  • Browser extensions
  • Shopify apps
  • Developer tools
  • APIs
  • Small B2B SaaS
  • Other niche software with recurring revenue

My goal isn’t to flip businesses. I want to be a long-term owner who maintains and gradually improves products while taking good care of their customers.

For now, I’m here to learn. I’d love to hear from founders who’ve built sustainable software businesses:

  • What’s one lesson you wish every first-time acquirer understood?
  • If you’ve sold a business before, what made you trust the buyer?
  • What makes a software business enjoyable to own over the long term?

Looking forward to learning from everyone here!

I would define the acquisition box before looking at deals: minimum owner earnings, concentration limits, technical risk, transition dependence, and payback period. That prevents an attractive story from quietly changing the investment criteria.

I’m not interested in any AI software. Also, seems untrustworthy considering you’re using all of the Grok Imagine videos.
