Best chat/email/helpdesk tool for launch?

We're currently comparing Intercom-like tools that can help handle customer service and leads for a SaaS as we're just starting out. What are tools you've used and enjoyed that are either free or much lower than Intercom these days?

Ideal features:

• Live chat
• Email inbox
• Knowledge base
• Leads management/email outreach

Considering Tawk.to currently since it's free, but it only seems to cover the live chat / knowledge base features.

And has anyone started with a free tool, then switch over to a paid tool once their business was more established? If so, what was the milestone that made you switch?
