Breaking Through the Block with a Hackathon: Our AI Adventure

Last week, my colleague and I took a deep dive into a hackathon hosted by Pinecone. The goal was challenging yet exciting: utilize AI to address real-world problems.

The driving force behind our participation was not the allure of winning, but rather the opportunity to push ourselves to create a solution under pressure. The absence of immediate users or customers often makes such projects seem like fun exercises rather than serious ventures. However, this was an opportunity for us to prove to ourselves that we could create something valuable when the stakes were high.

Observing successful SaaS businesses can be a rollercoaster of emotions. It's inspiring and humbling at the same time, making you question the worth of your own efforts. But, embarking on this hackathon journey reaffirmed our belief in our capabilities and the potential of our ideas.

Throughout this intensive week, we learned an incredible amount, from Vercel's edge function, and serverless lambda function, to setting up nginx on EC2, and experimenting with vector database and Langchain. Notably, we developed an AI-based app without touching a line of Python code - a feat that we're particularly proud of.

Our Project:

Our project aimed to solve a common problem: the lack of time for regular investors to constantly monitor news related to their stock portfolio. We envisioned an AI-powered solution that could aggregate the latest news about your stocks and deliver a concise email summary.

Although our initial ambition was to send these updates daily, we realized that making users wait for a set email time wasn't ideal for a demo. As a starting point, our app can now create a news round-up for the top 10 large-cap stocks. If the community finds it useful, we're eager to continue refining it.
