Bribes for signing up to your newsletter

Researching Ecommerce sites I noticed that it's very common for them to offer an incentive to get people to signup to their newsletters, mostly discounts off their first order.

I'm thinking of testing it out myself. Has anyone else tried offering freebies, discounts etc. to get people to subscribe to their newsletter?

I don't run an e-commerce site, I run an investing newsletter.

I realised that I had massive traffic on a piece I wrote 1 year ago. What I did to convert some of those readers that came to read and not susbcribe to the free version was to lock it behind a paywall and put a disclaimer saying:

💥Do you want to read the whole piece for FREE? Just subscribe with your e-mail (above) and reply to the Philoinvestor Welcome email with just the word “Valaris”. You will receive the post in your inbox💥

    Here it is:

I keep getting people organically sign up and email me back on the auto Welcome email I send with "Valaris".

    LEAD MAGNET!

@dennisbosch I guess you're right. I always think of Lead Magnets as free ebooks etc. AKA gated content. I'm thinking of offering a discount to my software product to newsletter subscribers, does that count as a Lead Magnet?
