Why I Built MorseHero.com - A Free Morse Code Game
I recently launched a small little side project, Morse Hero - a free browser game that lets you practice Morse code in a fun, rhythm-game style format.
The Back Story
I originally built Master CW - a comprehensive Morse Code learning platform - after getting my ham radio license and struggling with existing learning tools. Most Morse Code apps felt clinical and boring, so I created something more structured and engaging that actually helped me progress.
While Master CW has been doing well as a complete learning solution, I realized something was missing in the ecosystem: a simple, free game that makes practicing Morse Code genuinely fun, even for people who might never have considered learning it otherwise.
Why A Free Game?
Three main reasons:
Community Building: I wanted to create a low-barrier entry point to the fascinating world of Morse Code. Morse Hero helps grow the community by making practice enjoyable rather than feeling like homework.
Scratching My Own Itch: As a developer and Morse enthusiast, I wanted something I could quickly jump into for a few minutes of practice without the structure of a full lesson.
Product Validation: Honestly, it's also a great way to introduce people to what's possible with Morse code learning. Those who get hooked on Morse Hero might eventually want the more comprehensive features of Master CW.
The Tech
Built it with vanilla JavaScript and Web Audio API for generating the tones. Nothing fancy, but it's responsive, works on mobile, and doesn't require any login or installation.
What's Next
I'm keeping Morse Hero completely free while I gather feedback and add more game modes. For those who want to dive deeper, there will be a subtle path toward Master CW, but never any pushy upselling.
