Is it important that the company you work for has a vision?
Hi,
it is a while that I am thinking about my job. I am a software engineer in a big corporate, and more often I start to think: do really my have a purpose? Would be it more satisfactory maybe work still as dev but for a no profit association or a company with a more important purpose like "cure cancer" or help the society? Is it just me having these thoughts?
I feel like it comes down to "do I have an interest in where I am?". Yes, you may be a simple little cog however does this give value to you? The morals/purpose/drive of a company (small or large) only go so far to influence your own path.
On a flip side, where ever you work it's always the same work. Make sure that you're happy with your career choice as changing jobs might not do it.

I’ve always needed to work somewhere that has meaning for me, I just don’t do my best work if I don’t believe in what I’m doing. But meaning - or purpose - comes in a lot of different forms, and you don’t necessarily need to work somewhere with a world-changing mission to find it.
I think if you work somewhere that has a culture that really aligns with your personal values, and if you have a team environment that’s mutually supportive, and nurturing - then that can also help to create a purposeful work envrionement. I’ve worked in both places with social missions and those without, and in the end it’s always the team culture that makes the difference.
No. Though, if I was offered a role with a potentially world-changing vision versus one in a minor corporation AND the compensation was similar then I'd naturally choose the one which came across as more exciting at that time.
It's worth bearing in mind that even the most boring of companies can do things for the greater good by simply treating their staff well and paying their taxes.
Every new, exciting job becomes just another job eventually, at least for those of us who envision doing something that truly makes a difference in the world.
One solution is to work on something you're passionate about on the side, even if it doesn't make you money. Listlessness makes life feel muted. Best of luck!
