I was recently inspired by Brett @ DesignJoy's story about building a million dollar business as a solo design agency. Chartfleau.com has been a side project of mine for the past couple years. It's basically a design agency specializing in data visualization, but it's never had a really focused business model. I've had a few good clients with projects lasting from 1-6 months, but I want it to grow.
I think DesignJoy's model of making a productized service with predictable outcomes, costs, and a streamlined onboarding process using Stripe for payments might be a good fit here. Brett's advice about showcasing pricing plans really struck me because I've always left pricing to be discussed on calls, which often leads to unfocused discussions about budgets that require follow-up and make it harder to close.
One big challenge is that there's a difference between the time and effort involved with a design business like Brett's, and my offering which is more development heavy. This will make it harder to scale and I know I couldn't handle half as many clients as DesignJoy on my own. However, I think the data visualization niche might be just the right size to make this work. It's an area I'm very experienced with, plus there's a lot of potential for automation and building reusable components to save time.
Wish me luck, and please refer Chartfleau if you know anyone looking for data visualization services. I'll report back on how the new productized business model performs.
