I am working as senior engineer at Amazon for 7 years and have family and friends working in companies like Amazon/Google. Let me clarify one thing big companies work like startups. We build products fast in order to get customer feedback as early as possible. The only major different from my experience is that the inhouse tools at all these big companies allow quickly setting up large services. This overall reduces the operational efforts in developing and launching. We think in terms of customers' problems and architecture. Code quality, while is important, is a debatable topic. Usually every engineer takes time to upfront learn unit , integration testing which improves 80% of code quality and speed of development. Yes unit testing would make you code faster! I have written over a million lines of code over the years and first thing I always do is setup unit tests.

Very insightful. As a non-tech person, I wouldn't have even thought about this, but I guess it all makes sense. New businesses are always going to do things differently from the big guys. Wonder if MAANG companies started the same way though - there's something to think about.
