Consumer vs business spending

People like Patrick McKenzie give the advice to target businesses as customers instead of consumers and mention that they have bigger pockets. I'd love to see some data on this. For example, how much money do businesses spend per year vs what consumers spend?

Spend on what? every business has a very different spend budget.

    • The size of business will determine the spend.
    • A business spend is less flunctuating/fickle than a consumer spend.

New spend in a small to medium business is typically after a change in broader context (often transformational).

Currently there are several significant shifts underway:

    • moving towards circular economy, plastic packaging is out and shift to host of sustainable packaging solutions -- naked packaging, reuse, refill etc.. RFIDS, Blockchain and mobile data capture technologies are boosted
    • moving towards digitalisation. Existing business reducing their brick mortar shopfront (e.g. collective shopfronts) and moving to true online business (rather than a basic ecommerce store)
    • moving towards open technologies, community focused, crowd source data rather than expensive proprietary technologies and trying to do it all themselves.
    • chatgpt and generative AI - empowers the SME to do more themselves. Be more informed. Cut thru the marketing noise. Cut thru the inbound overwhelm. It will also boost the citizen shift (Citizens are employees just not paid (volunteers)). Plus the decline in SEO strangle-hold for first time in history. Yah!

Remember business are also a collection of citizens. Albiet with a budget and existing operational costs.

Stay true to solving a real problem, with a superb solution. If the problem is a business problem, and you are truelly solving it (versus hallow promises), and you can be trusted, you will gain traction and succeed e.g. Tally Forms

I have not read the article but its bookmarked.

I was thinking about what the spend is across the, say, US economy by businesses vs by consumers. Maybe broken down by sector. Or size of the business. That way, as an indie hacker, if we know where the money is being spent we know where to look.

Hey, by all means - feel free to go down that track. I personally would not as no value. Indies -- it is about solving a real problem rather than chasing a hypothetical or stat % around cash. Even once you identified the cash flow then you have use some horrid marketing tactic to flip the prospects with the cash. Yeeck on principle and Yeeck on effort. High effort, little return.

What is the real problem that needs solving ?
