Daily: Quick help and feedback

As indie hackers it can be hard to get feedback on our projects.

Posts are great, but so many are left with 0 comments :(

So for times when you need quick feedback on your landing page, UI, logo etc. This daily post will be perfect for that.

Good comments should be short and easy to answer.

  • What can be improved layout wise for my landing page?
  • My customer persona are developers, how can i improve my header/subheader for xyz.com?
  • I plan on posting xyz.com to Product hunt, what do you think of this video/image/comment/description?

Bad comments are general and difficult to answer.

  • How can I improve my landing page?
  • How can i get customers to my product?

Make sure to comment at least once before commenting yourself.

I will post this daily at 8am GMT. Which makes it perfect to share your Product Hunt launch.

This feedback format seems like a great idea. If it catches on, maybe it should be its own IH group.

Yesterday I watched a talk by the awesome Jason Cohen with title "Naked Business: How Honesty Makes You More Money" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTLaswJ_t_w) which speaks, as the title suggests, about honesty in business.

One of the things he criticizes is how most companies write their comparison tables, because most of them seem to suggest that their product has all the features while the competitors miss many of them, so their own product looks much better. At the same time, they fail to list at least some features that they don't have (yet) and that their competitors have - it's rare that a product truly has everything compared to competitors.

He says that omissions are like lies or even worse, and that people tend to appreciate honesty and that if you are ready to admit your limitations upfront, they will believe your other (positive) claims more easily.

I am not saying that you are not being honest here, but AFAIK Webflow has a ton of features. Are you sure you have listed all the features that matter that your product and Webflow have combined? If yes, then wow if you check all the boxes. But if you haven't listed some features that your product doesn't have just to be clear with who is trying to make a decision, some people might not trust you.

I don't have any comparison tables although I have a vs-Wordpress page (will write one about Ghost too) where I just explain why my product is intentionally simpler (no plugins for example) and worth trying for one specific use case (blogs), recommending that users stick with Wordpress if they need something more advanced or a different kind of website.

As another example that might not be relevant to you, Jason also mentions about presenting one's own company as bigger than it actually is, and that's also not good. I was kinda afraid that people might not want to try my product because I am a one-man team, but what he says makes sense and I am changing every "we" to "I" in the copy and have an "About" page that clearly shows that it's just me.

Hopefully people will appreciate the honesty and figure that as a very small company I can be quicker with things like support or responding to feedback about features etc. Better that they know in advance that it's just me than discovering after and having a bad impression of me.

Having said all of this, I did try your product recently and think it's awesome, you clearly have done a lot of work there ;)

      100% agree, I put 7/12 Webflow.

Maybe I can put raised 140m as something we don't have :)

In all seriousness I love our product and we get customers swapping from Webflow, the only thing they beat us in is maybe advanced css options using their GUI. But none of our customers care about that.

      1. 1

Do you have all the features that Webflow has?

        1. 1

I believe the goal of the competitor page is to help customers decide.

I have listed features that customers have told me are important to them.

@volkandkaya Are you looking to get https://versoly.com/96ab22c6/webflow-alternative this website reviewed? or is it some other website?

    1. 1

It is a draft page, looking for feedback on the table.

Indie hackers have a bunch of smart people, so hopefully they can let me know what i'm missing.

      1. 1

        Ahh, good luck anyways!

This is a work in progress https://versoly.com/96ab22c6/webflow-alternative

Does the table make sense? Am I missing anything?

It's smart to target Webflow users, as they could want something simpler to use, but most of the information you display isn't accurate.

Building a simple landing page in Webflow takes a week at worst for a complete newbie.

It took me two days to launch my first project and I hadn't used a design tool in my entire life. I also hadn't CSS knowledge or any coding knowledge for that matter.

Webflow has a Smart CMS with 12 ready-made templates.

Webflow doesn't require 3rd party integrations for the stuff you have mentioned unless you consider embedding a few lines of code a 3rd party integrations.

Webflow's websites are really fast. I have built multiple projects with a 95+ score on both mobile and desktop. When one of my websites scores less than 90 I am really surprised.

Overall, your comparison seems really biased. If I have would ever land on that page with previous Webflow knowledge, I wouldn't trust your product.

Having tried both products I can say that yours wins for ease of use and team pricing, for everything else Webflow is a lot better (which is understandable being a Venture-backed business valued at $2B).

Comparisons like this should be an opportunity for the company to underlines its core strengths and positioning, not to try to look better than the alternative overall. They are also an opportunity for customers to see how truthful the information you provide is and I don't think you would pass that test.

Thanks for the feedback (always difficult).

        • I have watched people on twitter take weeks to build basic landing pages. 100s of founders have also told me themselves. But good to have this data point as well. Maybe I only speak to the founders who struggle a lot.
        • I didn't know that, I will have to investigate. Do you have a link?
        • We have in-built analytics into the platform, you don't need a 3rd party solution.
        • With native integrations you can paste the id in and we will handle it. Pagespeed can go from 80/100 to 20/100 on mobile if you use chat widgets.
        • Native integrations with email marketing so you don't need Zapier and have to wait 15mins.

When you say everything else what do you mean?

    2. 1

Overall, I think this is good. Minor comments:

      • In title, I would use "vs." instead of "Vs"
      • "Webflow is a tool built for designers who have spent 1000's of hours in tools such as Photoshop." is a weird sentence... on first read, I thought it meant you need to know Photoshop to use Webflow which seemed false. I think you mean that it's complex like Photoshop. Maybe you should just say that, something like "Webflow is a powerful but complex tool like Photoshop which has a difficult learning curve." ... basic idea is that Webflow = powerful but complex while Versoly = powerful and easy to learn and use
      • It's unclear to me what "smart cms" means... maybe a link to documentation or explanation would help.
      • I may be unfamiliar with industry jargon, but I don't know what "content editors" means... is that the number of people who can edit pages? Or write blog posts? Both?
      • Page speed seems quite important, maybe it should be higher up on page, like after SEO (since they are related)

      Nice work!
