I've been working on my business for over a year now and I've built a lot of neat things. I've gotten over 500 signups and have some active users. The problem is that the niche I'm targeting is extremely seasonal. It was apparent when looking at search volume for my targeted keywords but I didn't realize how much not only search volume changed but also retention.
At the start of the school year there was a huge influx of new users and it was very exciting watching the data come in. New users stuck around and the active users was a growing trend. But as the weeks turned into months, it became apparent the high season was coming to an end. Its very hard to watch the numbers decline week after week and maintain motivation.
I've grown hesitant to develop new features lately because I feel I need to decide whether to continue marching forward or pivot. I've tried brainstorming ideas for new businesses, new features to enhance the existing offering, and broadening the potential market by changing up the marketing. All of which have their drawbacks. A new business is like starting from 0 again. Adding new features could just be a waste of time. Broadening the market could sacrifice the niche market and put it into a league of competitors with much more to offer. There's no easy solution so I'm starting with a test.
What I've decided to do is turn subscriptions back on for only new users with a 30 day trial instead of the previous 14. After 100 new signups make it entirely through the sales funnel I should have at least a few subscriptions. If I get a few subscriptions, I'll consider continuing with this niche.
If I fail to get any subs then the current plan is to ditch the "homeschool gradebook" target and move more generic towards "online grading". Search volumes are significantly higher for "online grading" but the competition looks much tougher too.
