Do Customer Testimonials Work?

I've heard a lot from startup founders and advisors to founders that customer testimonials were super important.

However, I've never heard of a person signing up for something because the testimonials convinced them. I certainly have never done so.

Is this something we just tell ourselves is important? Or does it actually make an impact in acquiring customers? How can you tell if it does or not?

For SaaS they are more important than anywhere else. Take a lot at the amount of SaaS directories out there. From our experience, people very often visit them before creating an account with us and for a reason. You want to make sure your time spent on setting everything up is justified.

It depends on your approach, but you can use testimonials work really well for you.

One way is to publish in-depth case studies along with the recommendations. Very appealing to potential customers from the same niche.

Another idea is video-testimonials. If designed and produced well, they can work like best ads.

    I have no idea.
Usually I don't believe in any testimonials.
But maybe there is a subconscious level.

I think they are important, but - what's even more powerful are unprompted customer testimonials. People talking about your product on twitter, or reddit, or IH, and recommending your product to others...not really any way to encourage this apart from to build something people truly care about.

I still think they are valuable on your website though, even just for the social proof of a good customer name.

I think they are important to an extent, especially if have some sort of info product, app, SaaS or extension. It's social proof, which can go a long way.

Testimonials can also highlight the pain points that your product helps them solve for the user. You may not hear a lot of about testimonials helping people, but they definitely help in making the user come to a decision.

Absolutely yes, specially as you are building a brand that is relatively new to the market, customer testimonials are very important, people might don't want to accept it, or perhaps it might be even on their subconscious but it adds credibility to any product.
