Do We Lack Discipline?

A friend of mine (my hair stylist β€” 🀣!) sent me this a screenshot via text the other day and I've been thinking about it for quite some time:

lol

Do you believe this to be true? If you aren't able to... obtain a new skill, start that side hustle, or gain more knowledge... does that really mean that you've failed spending your time adequately or wisely or well during the quarantine?

My honest opinion is that it's not really about discipline... some of us are trying to figure out how to "reconfigure" our lives in a post-covid-19 world.

And, I think that most folks are going to leave this period and season with new skills and new perspectives and new knowledge anyway β€” it's all about how you use it (and when).

In my experience, builders, creators, and entrepreneurs do not lack discipline β€” they lack focus... and most folks also lack a strong, and healthy community.

So, perhaps we lack those things more than anything else... especially community.

If you don't leave this period of quarantine with a better appreciation and deeper understanding of your need for community... then, you've done it wrong.

We need it more than ever!

I've seen that meme (is it even a meme) before, and in my humble opinion I think it's a bit shortsighted.

As you legitimately pointed out, many people are heavily burdened by the sudden need to adapt to a completely different society in absolutely record speed. Especially people with kids at home have a difficult time reconfiguring the daily rhythm to keep their kids entertained and try do some work as well. All in all, combined, this is a task which would take 36 hours a day, and then I'm not even counting in the time needed for your mind to process everything that's happening.

I think introspection is more important than anything else right now. It makes it more bearable to live with yourself, and for others still around you to deal with your presence as well.

The phrase "lack discipline" makes it sound binary – like, either you have it or you don't. Discipline is like a muscle – just keep working at it, and it'll grow πŸ’ͺ

it is. just like entrepreneurship. it's a muscle!

While the phrase "this time it's different" is over used and misused, I believe this time is different. As others have mentioned, many of us are trying to be as productive as possible with our new found "free" time. However, there is a lot of mental angst from family, friends, community and the media that is weighing heavily on us all. It's also hard to be productive when you have concerns about where you can buy toilet paper. Remember Maslow's hierarchy of needs. I consider it a win if I come out of this with a cleaner and more organized house!

yes. this is definitely different... i've never lived through a pandemic... have you!?

      the mental angst is real!

The type A personality in me will ride with this saying til the day I die. πŸ’ͺ

And then I learned compassion and empathy. I don't agree with this one bit. What this says is not wrong, though it's heartless. These are trying, unprecedented times and people are grieving and struggling. Not all of us are fortunate to have such freedom to "level up".
