Do you do physical standups using JIRA?
A pain point I find at work is doing a standup using JIRA, having to switch between one person and the next is fiddly because (i) I unfilter based on Bob and then filter based on Jane and (ii) unless you have perfect eyesight it is easy to click the wrong icon (hopefully everyone has good avatars) and it's hard to see the circle that shows it has been highlighted. Another issue is standups happen in meeting rooms where the keyboard and mouse are not easy to reach or use while standing up.
I want to solve this but inject some cool into it too! The idea is using voice recognition you say "Show Jane" and it shows that person's work on the board. I might do other switch modes as well based on face recognition / speech recognition.
So the question is - if I built a very prototype would anyone want to try it out on their standups at work?
If I can get 5 teams to try it then I'll build it, you can use it for free forever. If I don't decide to go ahead with the idea I'll open source it so you can carry on using it that way.
Also if you don't use JIRA but use something else (Trello?) and have a similar need then I can build it for that too.
My team's stand-ups were never done around a computer, so no technology. Stand ups IMHO are about making people aware of what's happening on the team, not a progress tracking activity.
There was a clear expectation that each team member would be prepared to answer "What did I complete yesterday?", "What am I working on today?", and "Is there anything in the way of making progress?".
Thanks everyone, again. My idea has been booted out into the stratosphere. Which is great, one less idea to think about. And in addition I am going to see if we can move away from using the board too much as a prop (except for digging into a ticket when occasionally needed).
My stand ups have always involved 0 tech. Everyone just goes in a circle and each person goes over what they did yesterday and what they plan to do today. Whole thing takes 3-4 minutes
We do standups using JIRA every morning. We discuss each column in the agile board to see if there are any problems. We never clicked on avatars.
Why do you do that?
Thanks. It’s so one person can easily see their work. There are too many cards to see everyone’s work without scrolling. Are you able to see all the work on the screen? How big is the team and number of cards if you don’t mind me asking?
In theory, there shouldn't be so many cards that you can't see them - at least not that are actually being worked on. If someone has 3 or 4 "In-Progess" tickets, that's probably at least 2 too many.
True, but showing 7 team members cards in one column on a TV that is viewable by everyone would mean zooming out to make them unreadable. However this is an "XY" problem. because as others have commented standups are (perhaps) better done without tech.
My squad has 5 devs. Usually 12-16 tickets per sprint (2 weeks). Team is half onsite, half remote, so we use zoom all the time. In the 'progress' column there are mostly 5-6 tickets, review column has 2-3 tickets.
