Does content marketing actually work?

Doing some research on marketing channels for startups and I see a lot of conversation around content marketing for lead generation.

Do any indie hackers have experience with growing a small SaaS startup using Content Marketing? If so is there anything to know before diving in a writing some content?

Thanks,
Alex

Yes, undoubtedly. It's 100% effective and it's what I spend most of my time doing for our projects.

However, the caveats are this: it takes a long time, it has to be absolutely well researched and high quality, it has to be very frequent, and very consistent. There is just too much competition out there to do it halfway. You should expect to write at least one solid article per week for a whole year just to get some headway.

I second that! It took us about 1 and half year to get an inbound lead through content marketing.

Content marketing works, but you need to considerd a couple of things:

    • in case of organic traffic (Google) it is a marathon and not a sprint. Thus you might need to constantly write articles for 2-3 years before reaching the level of customers you want/need.
    • as for Google you need to write about what people look for aka keywords instead of what you think people might search/find interesting.
    • do not focus on vanity metrics aka visitors per month/retweets/shares etc, but converisons/leads and retention instead.
-while going for ads or paidcontent again ask yourself what your ROI or the life time value of your customers would be and do the math before burning money.

I am undertaking various experiments to market content using multiple channels.
While there are zillions it case studies to go through, most of these start talking when they’ve reached a milestone (for ex - how I reached 200,000 visitors from zero, or , how distributing content through the right channels helped me scale to $1M in revenue)

However, what is even more interesting is to read someone’s journey when he/she is starting from scratch :|

There's no question that content marketing can be an extremely effective way to reach your target audience and achieve your business goals. But does it actually work?
The answer, of course, is that it depends.
Content marketing can be an incredible tool for building brand awareness, driving traffic, and generating leads. But it only works if it's done correctly.
If you're thinking about using content marketing to reach your audience, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

    1. Make sure your content is high-quality and relevant.
    2. Promote your content across multiple channels.
    3. Be consistent with your content marketing strategy.

yes, agreed with the above unwaveringly, it works. one additional note is that focusing on one particular channel, whatever it is that you deem to be your strength, will only accelerate the growth and amplify the results. for me historically, written content (and the resulting organic traffic) and webinars have been tremendously successful. but sporadically doing a lot of different channels just dilutes the impact i think.

and yes, distribution is a critical ingredient that is often overlooked.

There are a lot of good examples of growing a SaaS using content marketing: the first that comes to mind is Ahrefs.

Content marketing alone is not enough though, you’ll need a way to distribute your content. In Ahref’s case it is mainly SEO, but it could also be paid social ads or other channels.

One thing to keep in mind before getting to the writing part is making sure you understand who your target audience is and what kind of content has the potential to resonate with them.
