.. so I was scrollin through some music news this morning and Dr. Dre just said something out loud that the entire industry has been tiptoeing around for two years 😭
In a New York Times interview, Dre admitted he uses AI in his production process. not hiding it. not apologizing for it. just straight up said yes I'm using it as a tool to see what it does with what I just made.
But the part that actually broke the internet was what he said next.
Jimmy Iovine brought up the idea of "closet AI producers" — people already using AI in their workflow but refusing to publicly admit it. Dre's response?
"That's a good way to put it. They're using it, they just don't want to admit it."
wtf 😭 he just aired out half the industry in one sentence.
And then he went even further. when people told him they were against AI he compared them directly to the people who were against drum machines when they first came out. against synthesizers. against every new tool that eventually became the industry standard.
"OK, you sound like the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out. It's a new tool for creativity."
that line alone should end the debate but we all know it won't lol.
here's what actually matters though. Dre isn't some bedroom producer trying to justify using Suno.

one of the most respected producers in hip hop history, saying AI is now part of his creative process and calling out the hypocrisy of everyone pretending otherwise.
and the hypocrisy is real. the same producers publicly performing outrage about AI are quietly running it in their sessions. the closet AI producer thing isn't a conspiracy theory. Dre just confirmed it exists and it's widespread.
he also dismissed the idea that AI will replace musicians entirely. said the only people who see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.
