Drop Your Number 1 Traffic Source + How and Why 👇🏼

Help your fellow IH'ers.

Here's your task for today...

  1. Drop your number one traffic source (figures if possible)

  2. How you made it happen

  3. Why it works for you or your business (business model)

  4. link to your website

I'll start:

  1. SEO

  2. Content marketing, via blogs/reviews on my website. Some that were 6000 words and above. Keyword researched the fu*k out of it and went after long tail keywords with minimal competition to rank fast. Also went after keywords with buying intent behind them e.g "..... sign up"

  3. Works for my business as it is affiliate related, therefore margins are harsh. Paid ads, didn't pay...

    1. Facebook
    2. Daily small advertisement, I publish to each social platform every day but Facebook I spend about a euro every day to promote to a very niché targetted audience.
    3. Not sure if it works, but it certainly helps grow the audience at this stage, it also seems to be an engaging audience. (highest engaging is from Twitter though)

For anyone interested, the dollar a day strategy seems to be written up here: https://devonhennig.com/blog/dennis-yu-dollar-a-day-social-marketing-strategy/

      1. 1

Thanks for this, will have a read through

    2. 1

My friend Dennis Yu has been talking about the power of $1/day ads on Facebook for years. It's an excellent strategy if you know how to work it. Sounds like you do. Well done!

      1. 2

I didn't know about this "strategy" but will definitely look into it, just did it because the results were good haha.

        1. 2

Yea, look up Dennis Yu of Blitzmetrics.com. He's a genius.

          1. 1

            What's the gist of this?

            Why $1 vs $100?

What's the targeting? What's the use case?

            Thanks for the help!

            1. 1

The gist: $1 per day, per post. When you find one that really takes off, throw more money at it.

Organic Facebook posts that offer value, posted every day, and given a $1 daily ad budget. Dennis gets into the strategy in his course, I wouldn’t do it justice.

He’s worked with plenty of big budget accounts (NBA teams to name one category), but for small accounts he still recommends the $1 per day formula.

              1. 1

got it, so you want to promote your facebook posts:

                • what's the audience? your existing audience? just to basically boost it?
                1. 1

I wouldn’t do the strategy justice. When it comes to Facebook ads, that is my kryptonite.

    3. 1

Are you using paid ads on twitter too or just facebook?

Twitter is amazing for engagement (especially in the direct messages - huge value there).

      1. 1

        Hey Lou,

For now only Facebook, I didn't figure the Twitter ads out completely it proves too be more difficult to setup

Do you have any advice/tips for me?

        1. 1

You have a BUNCH of content. Content that needs to be repurposed, repackaged and spread EVERYWHERE.

Turn all of your already made content into:

          Twitter THREADS
          E-Books
Blog articles where you go more in-depth into each topic
          Youtube video
Instagram post slides all on one topic
          Reply to Quora questions
Upload "10 best dev tips" and such to medium

Hope this little run down helps!

          1. 1

If you are confident being infront of the camera, then making videos and demonstrations then could be a huge leg up for you.

You could make the in-depth videos about dev tips, tutorials etc, post them to YouTube, Hideout TV, IGTV, and if applicable podcast...

A VERY underrated audience grower is TikTok. For every tip you make for your newsletter, also make it into a tiktok.

Theres a girl on there right now who talks about coding all the time, and she has blown up (100,000's of views) in no time. If you did this you could transfer your audience from tiktok to twitter, IG, FB and then again your newsletter...

            Again, hope this helps!

            1. 2

Really nice tips @LouTromans thanks, will definitely look into more sources.
I wanted to start with Youtube soon, but timewise having a full-time day job it's quite difficult, same with a podcast, but TikTok is a nice addition!

              1. 1

no worries. Yeah time is always a big issue.

That's why I suggest you start with top of the funnel and then cut out and spread micro content from your longform.

Make one youtube video a week (for example)

use that same video as a podcast

cut out 15seconds-1minute clips of the youtube video where you talk about a quick tip, and upload it to Tiktok x2/3

3 sources from one longform video, what do you think?

                1. 1

Great idea, thank you will definitly look into this!

  2. 2

    1.- Direct /referral.
2.- Long story short, I made a lot of content from the beginning in 3 to 4 different platforms and I made a chrome extension where the links to all the tools is there instead to bookmark it.
    3.- It just works...
4.- https://www.colorsandfonts.com but next week the redesign is going to be deployed.

    1. 1

What content do you speak of??

      1. 1

        Well, I started on

The site gets from 300 to 600 users every day mostly new ones and 750 subscribers by this very moment.

Edit : I also listed the site in more 30 places...

  3. 2
    1. SEO (100k/mo)

    2. It’s my personal blog that I’ve been writing social media marketing articles on since 2011. Could never really get past 20k visitors/mo until I finally did my own SEO content audit in 2017. After doing it, deleting more than half the articles on the site and doubling down on optimizing my best content, traffic grew by 100% in 30-days... then 200% in 60-days... then 400% in 6 months... 1 year later I had 600% more traffic... and I had only published (maybe) 3 new articles.

    3. Works for my businesses because I have multiple businesses. My personal brand is what allows me to launch new ideas for an already established audience.

    4. https://dustinstout.com

    1. 1

      Woooooow....

SEO Audit? You mean getting rid of old articles that aren't bringing in traffic and only hindering your rankings?

How did you optimise your blog to bring in that much traffic?

      1. 2

Well, my SEO Audit process (which I've since helped several large businesses in the digital marketing space replicate) was a little more than just finding which articles weren't bringing traffic.

We gathered all the data we could about every single page on the site to find:

        • how much traffic it got in the last 6 months
        • how many backlinks it had
        • how many social shares it had
        • how many words and images it contained

        Then we tried to understand:

        • is this article still relevant?
        • does this article fit with our long-term goals?
        • is the article aligning with our brand?
        • is the article going to be relevant for the next 5 years?
        • what keywords is this article good for?
        • is the article conflicting with (or competing with) any of our other articles?

From there, we categorized all articles with an action:

        • Delete/redirect
        • Combine
        • Update

Items that were "deleted" were redirected to the most relevant article/page that it aligned with.

Items that were marked "combine" were those that had similar content to other articles and could be combined into one, more authoritative article.

Items marked "Update" were reworked with better keyword targeting, updated for most current information, and republished (just bumped up the publish date in WordPress).

Everything that remained on the site also went through a head-to-toe SEO optimization.

The whole process took about 3 months from data gathering, to analysis, and then implementation. We're much faster now thanks to some new tools that have emerged (namely Ahrefs Content Audit tool).

Drop your number one traffic source (figures if possible)
Facebook ads (for acquisition) 30-40% of the new incoming traffic.

    How you made it happen
keep testing your creatives and audiences and focus on ROAS.

    1. Indie Hackers. I just launched my website, like a few weeks back, but I haven't really even promoted in here or anything, apart from mentioned on threads like these and creating IH product, but I am really surprised by the amount of traffic it is bringing. It brought in 265 until today which beat my expectations of 10-50 people by a long shot.

    2. That's the thing, didn't really do much. I created an IH product and I mentioned the site I think once or twice, but one thread about "what are you working on" got really popular and that brought in the most users.

    3. My website is all about business experiments, SEO, building a website and income sources, which I think releases to the IH community. We are creating something, we are striving for financial freedom, we are looking to build companies, income sources and share our success or ask for advice.

At the moment I am receiving most traffic from Indie Hackers ...

    1. 1

You obviously work hard to get as many backlinks as you can, but have you every thought about starting a blog all about email marketing for small businesses etc to boost your set rankings etc?

      1. 1

I have written a few articles on my personal blog and I have been thinking to start blogging on Medium (or start a blog on Kingmailer “ as you suggest)

        1. 1

Write the blog on your own site, and then import it to medium. That way you get maximum engagement and traffic across two sources enabling them both to rank on google and also be pushed out to medium readers internally

          https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/214550207-Import-a-post

Make sure you follow medium guidelines so that your post is pushed out to medium users too!

          1. 1

            Great, thanks for the feedback

    1. Indie Hackers. My website has been live for 2 weeks now and 35 visits, which is exactly 50%, is coming from Indie Hackers.
    2. Reacting to people who needed help. Got a big compliment on a post from someone who gave free feedback on landing pages. Trying to provide value...
    3. So far I have used it to collect email addresses.

      make it 36 now...

Indiehackers is the most underrated traffic source ever. The community on here is what makes the site so amazing.

Give out as much free content, advice and help as you can. It will help you out a lot and establishes yourself as an authoritative figure.

  8. 2

Pretty much same as you for my personal website:

    1. Majority of the traffic comes from Google.
    2. I have a large content archive of posts I've published over a longer period of time so that helps get the traffic from search.
    3. More of a personal project to share insights etc rather than having a specific business model.
    4. https://markosaric.com/

But for another project it's a completely different picture:

    1. Majority of traffic comes from different niche communities such as Indie Hackers. You can see the exact stats at https://plausible.io/plausible.io
    2. The site is fairly new so too early to get traffic from search but still the content marketing is responsible for the traffic here too and hopefully search traffic will come in the future.
    3. The business model is the SaaS subscription model.

By content marketing are you referring to your blogs? - They are a great read btw!

Have you ever considered branching your blogs out? repurposing them into instagram posts, twitter threads and even youtube videos?

You have all the content there already, all you'd have to do is edit them a little bit and that can provide a whole new traffic source for you?

      Great reply, very helpful!!

      1. 1

Thanks Louis! Yeah, I mean content marketing for my blog posts. I do repurpose some of them in social media and syndicate them on other sites too such as Medium publications. That's one of the sources of traffic too.

        1. 1

great stuff, im guessing the process for repurposing your blog articles is completely manual? Would you ever be interested in a tool that automated this?
