Experience with writing a book in public?

Does anyone have experience with writing a book in public? A bit like #buildinpublic, but for books? I'm looking for process, best practices and success- & horror-stories.

All I can find is "find an audience, engage them, ..., profit"-blogspam, but I want more in-depth material.
