Experiment - can I outrank old tools by capitalizing on the latest Google update?

If you have been reading up on SEO lately you would have seen that bloggers and niche site owners are complaining about the latest Google update that seems to promote user-generated content sites like Reddit and Quora. My thesis is that since these platforms are given more weight now by Google, building links in these platforms could make it easier to outrank older tools with more links in blogs that user generated content sites. I am a novice at SEO so I could be totally wrong, but this is an experiment.
