Im looking to start on a new product. There are 2 options:
Open Source: Has 100 features from which I dont intend to use 90% as it will just add to the confusion and modify/add 3-4 new functionality
DIY: Will be a steep curve getting a decent product out as it will be feature by feature and might not solve the immediate pain on v1 launch.
Decision: Do I start with the open source and continue with the extra headache of maintaining 90% of the features ensuring nothing else breaks if I make one change and also having so much extra work for AI as the code will be massive when imported into Cursor/Windsurf. Or do I start with the most basic version even though the clear pain point is not present and value add will be v3 or v4.
OpenSouce advantage: has all the possible future enhancements from day1. its just that the opensource version is not built for non technical users.
DIY advantage: can start to only provide minimal featured product and allow gradual feature additions even though they might be similar ideas from the open source but allows feedback from customers to pivot if needed to do different.
