Free AI Coding Without an API Key: What Are the Options?

If you want to start vibe coding without an API key, there are more options today than there were a year ago.

But most approaches come with a tradeoff.

Free tiers

Some AI coding agents offer free usage.

This is probably the easiest way to start, but free tiers usually have limits. If you're building a larger project, you can eventually run out of prompts or tokens.

Bring your own API key

A lot of terminal coding agents are free to install and use, but require an API key from a model provider.

This gives you access to powerful models, but you're still paying for inference.

So the coding agent is free, but the actual AI coding isn't.

Run AI models locally

Local models remove the API bill completely.

You can run them directly on your computer and connect them to a coding workflow.

The downside is that capable models require capable hardware, and local performance isn't always comparable to the best cloud models.

Use an advertiser-funded AI coding agent

This is the approach I'm experimenting with through Clixad.

The advertiser provides the revenue that helps cover the AI inference.

The tradeoff is straightforward:

Why build it this way?

I think there's a group of people who fall between the existing options.

They want to use AI coding agents, but:

don't want another subscription
don't want to manage API keys
don't have hardware for large local models
use AI coding too occasionally to justify paying every month

For a student building a project over the weekend, an indie hacker prototyping an idea, or someone learning to vibe code, that could be enough.

It obviously isn't the ideal model for everyone.

If you're using an AI coding agent eight hours a day, paying for predictable access probably makes more sense.

But if the alternative is paying $20+ per month for something you use a few times, trading a few minutes for additional credits might be reasonable.

That's the experiment I'm running with Clixad.
