Free Codex Alternative: A Free AI Coding Agent for the Terminal

If you're looking for a free Codex alternative, the difficult part isn't finding another AI coding interface.

It's finding one that still gives you the actual coding-agent workflow without immediately requiring a subscription or your own API credits.

That's the problem I wanted to solve with Clixad.

Clixad is a free cloud-based AI coding agent for the terminal. The workflow is meant to feel familiar if you've used tools like Codex or Claude Code: the agent can inspect your project, read files, make changes, execute commands, test the result and fix issues as it goes.

The main difference is how the usage is funded.

You don't need your own OpenAI API key or another model API key, and there isn't a mandatory monthly subscription.

Clixad gives users free credits. More credits can be earned through advertiser-funded offers, forms and surveys. The revenue from those helps pay for the model inference.

So the AI isn't somehow running for free. The cost is simply being covered differently.

I built it because I think there's a gap between two groups.

There are developers who use coding agents heavily enough that paying for a premium tool makes sense.

And then there are people who want to try AI coding, build a side project, learn by experimenting, or only use a coding agent every now and then.

For the second group, paying for another subscription just to see whether AI coding is useful can be a pretty high barrier.

That's where I think a free Codex alternative makes sense.

Clixad isn't supposed to replace paid coding agents for heavy users. It's meant to make the same general style of agentic AI coding accessible without requiring a subscription or API setup first.

So the real question I'm interested in is:

How many people would use a terminal AI coding agent regularly if they could start without paying anything upfront?
