After experimenting with early tools like CowinAlertsBot, which gained 150,000 users overnight during the pandemic, their turning point came when a merchant paid them to build a text-based sales bot.
Before writing any core code for their SaaS platform, Spur, the founders ran automations manually for e-commerce clients. Experiencing the burden of repetitive customer queries firsthand while running a side apparel business, they officially launched their Shopify app in August 2022 to connect comments to product DMs.
Spur eschewed paid marketing, scaling to its first 100 clients through direct outreach, events, and education. Today, the bootstrapped company relies heavily on SEO and content marketing. Four years in, Spur employs a team of 12, serves 600 brands across 25 countries, and directly challenges industry giants like Klaviyo and Gorgias. Built on TypeScript, Svelte, Node.js, Postgres, and Redis, Spur now operates as a unified AI system that merges marketing and customer support into a single conversational flow.
