2.5 years ago, I started a politics newsletter called Tangle. The idea was simple: I wanted to share a wide range of opinions on a single topic every day, that way no matter who you were, if you read Tangle you'd see something that popped your bubble.
What bubble? You know, the one that Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google, and Instagram have created for us. The one that shares news and opinions with you that almost always reinforce your prior held beliefs.
When I started Tangle, I had ~10,000 Twitter followers, 8 years of reporting experience under my belt, and had never written a newsletter. Today, I have over 30,000 daily readers, over 4,800 subscribers, $23,000 of MRR, and an extremely loyal fan base. I'm super proud of all of it.
But the thing I'm most proud of? In a recent survey, I asked my readers if Tangle had ever changed their mind on an issue they read about. 1,057 readers took the poll.
72.5% of respondents said Tangle has helped them change their mind about a topic at least once.
I was thrilled. This, to me, is proof my concept can "hack" the information bubbles we're all living in. Not only that, it's also proof you don't have to be a fire-breathing, sensationalist partisan hack in order to create a thriving media business. You just have to build something new.
