I always treated failed payments as a rounding error.
Then I pulled the last 90 days of failed payment attempts.
On my own account the dollars were small — but the pattern was clear:
card fails → retries stop → customer disappears.
A lot of that isn’t “they hated the product.” It’s involuntary.
Curious what other founders see:
Not selling anything in this post — genuinely trying to learn how people handle this.
Update after a week of testing read-only Stripe connects:
Still early. Curious if anyone else has tried to separate involuntary churn $ from voluntary in Stripe without CSV exports?
No tool link... happy to share methodology if useful.
The interesting distinction is that failed payments look like churn in most dashboards, but they represent a different customer problem.
What would convince you that founders need a dedicated recovery layer instead of relying on Stripe's existing retry and billing tools?
For most founders, it comes down to two numbers..recovery rate and lost MRR visibility. Stripe’s built-in tools treat all failed payments the same with basic retry intervals. But a dead expired card needs an immediate clear card update link while an insufficient funds error needs timed retries aligned with payday cycles.
What usually convinces founders isn't the theory..it's running a quick audit on their last 90 days of Stripe data and seeing $2k–$10k in "uncollectible" revenue that was actually just soft declines that never got properly retried or messaged. Once you see the actual dollar amount leaking, a dedicated recovery layer pays for itself on the first recovered customer.
Appreciate the context.
Would be good to continue the conversation as you learn how founders respond to this problem.

Happy to keep you posted. I'm running the audit with founders over
the next few weeks, so I'll have actual aggregate numbers on hard vs
soft decline splits before long rather than just my own account.
If you're running subscriptions on Stripe yourself and want your own
90-day number, the audit is read-only and takes about a minute. Either
way, I'll share what I find.
Thanks! I’ve just sent it over.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts whenever you have a chance.
hey man can i ask you a solid & have you resend that. thanks in advance
Thanks! I already resent it a little while ago. Would you mind checking your inbox, and your spam or promotions folder as well just in case? If you still don't see it, let me know and I'll figure out another way to get it to you.

That's a useful signal I wouldn't have thought to watch. Legal pages
moving before announcements tracks with how quietly Stripe ships
billing changes generally.
Not directly on the failed payment side but I'll take it.
