I started a design and development agency called Spring Studio (tryspringstudio.com) with a co-founder 2 years ago. 1 year into it, we realized that development wasn’t for us.
Design fed our creativity and passion and development created headaches. We eliminated the development piece and doubled down on what we enjoyed the most - design. We pivoted to a design as a subscription model.
We knew there were competitors, and we studied them.
We applied what we learned and improved our process by incorporating:
👉🏻 Meaningful & open collaboration with clients
👉🏻 Quality UI/UX focused design
👉🏻 Fast turnaround times
👉🏻 Flat rate monthly pricing
We finalized all of our service offerings, redesigned our website, and launched!
...and nothing happened. 0 customers.
We tried small ad campaigns and cold outreach. It produced…nothing.
Still at 0 customers.
This was not going to be a walk in the park. We paused our ads and reevaluated our cold outreach strategy.
We relaunched with a strong focus on LinkedIn and cold email.
A few weeks later, we landed our 1st official customer.
Fast forward to current day, and we’re at about $55K MRR and growing!
Next steps:
👉🏻 Launch intense sales funnel and ad campaign on Facebook
👉🏻 Double down on cold LinkedIn outreach
👉🏻 Restructure cold email outreach (doesn’t work as well at scale unless its very targeted)
Starting a design as a subscription agency is definitely NOT easy. Client acquisition for a new business model has been challenging. It's much harder than DesignJoy makes it seem.
BUT very much doable, fun, and exciting!
Especially as you talk to clients who light up when you explain the process and of course when they see your work.
Super happy with how far we’ve come, and I’m excited to reach $1MM in ARR this year!
