Hiring frontend contractor on upwork - how to handle github etc
Hi there - I'm in the process of building a market intelligence analytics platform. I have a bunch of charts, tables etc. I've built it with Laravel with bootstrap. I'd like to use upwork etc to hire someone that can apply a liberal amount of polish to the design.
For those that have hired/worked on this basis, whats best practice for sharing the code. So you just make the css available? Do you share the entire github repo? Obviously this wont be someone that I know, so don't necesarily want to give them access to everything - happy to be told I'm a donut and I should just share.

It's going to be a struggle for them to work without a testing environment. If you are really concerned, you could build a script to generate some dummy data and remove the business logic, but it's probably not worth the time/effort.
The chance of someone actually reusing/stealing your code is pretty low, but it is possible.
I'd consider hiring someone a bit more expensive (agency or higher end freelancer based in your country) that you trust - they wouldn't risk their business on reusing your code.
Its the first time ive outsourced to be honest, so I'm reluctant to go down a more expensive route, and we're on a bit of a budget.
I'm think of setting up a unique dev site and seeing if I can set up a repo that just has the relevant files in it, merging into a dev branch and then pushing to live. The data is the valuable bit, so I can disguise that in the controllers.
Thinking about it, I don't even know how hiring a designer works. Do they literally work on the code, or do they just send over images with a design etc?
It depends, are you hiring a front end developer (who will write CSS/JS/HTML) or are you hiring a designer (will make you a sketch/photoshop design to implement or pass to a FE developer)?
