Horizon of saturation of food production markets

We determined the market saturation horizon for key European markets using current data on food production in Europe for the period 2000 to 2025. The results confirm the hypothesis of economic heterogeneity: while Central Europe is approaching its structural limit, there is significant potential for extensive growth in Eastern Europe.

The market saturation horizon methodology determines the saturation of a product or service within an industry. It shows how close existing markets within a region are to their capacity limits. In strategic analysis, this indicator is key for assessing long-term growth potential, as it enables companies to identify the point at which production expansion no longer yields the expected returns due to physical constraints on demand. Market saturation indicates the stage of a product’s life cycle, helping to differentiate between regions that are “actively growing”, where there is still room for new players, and regions that are “mature”, where market volume has reached its maximum.

According to the obtained data, countries such as France and Belgium have already reached a saturation level of 89%, effectively entering a mature phase. The expected plateau year for these markets is 2027, after which any increase in production volumes will require a radical revision of process chains. Germany, the largest producer in absolute terms with a forecast of over €240 billion for 2025, demonstrates a saturation level of 84.9%, giving it room for stable growth until 2028. These regions require businesses to implement strategies focused on asset consolidation and Industry 4.0 solutions to protect margins.

The cluster of emerging markets demonstrates the opposite trend. In Romania and Hungary, for example, the saturation level is only 62–65%, and the estimated plateau horizon extends beyond 2035. A similar situation is observed in Poland, where significant current production volumes have realised only two-thirds (66.3%) of the market potential. This data signals to investors and manufacturers that they should actively expand their presence in these regions, where market capacity allows for expansion without entering the fierce price competition typical of oversaturated Western markets.
